The Hoka Gaviota 6 is built for runners who need a high level of cushioning and a high level of support. It sits closest to the Hoka Bondi 9 in terms of cushioning, but adds the guidance needed for runners who over-pronate. If your foot rolls inward excessively as you run, the Gaviota 6 is designed to help control that movement and guide you more efficiently through the gait cycle.

Over-pronation usually happens when the arch compresses as the foot lands but does not reshape quickly enough before push-off. Instead of pushing off from the end of the big toe, the runner can end up pushing off from the inside of the foot. As this happens thousands of times during a run, it can lead to irritation and discomfort, including blisters on the inside of the foot, shin pain, pain below the kneecap or tightness down the outside of the thigh.

The Gaviota 6 uses a 39mm heel and 33mm forefoot stack, giving it the soft, protective feel you would expect from a highly cushioned Hoka road shoe. The 6mm drop helps reduce heel striking, while the rocker-shaped midsole helps the foot roll smoothly forwards. This reduces the amount of time the foot has to roll inwards and helps the runner maintain a quicker cadence with less over-striding.

For support, the Gaviota 6 uses an H-shaped stability frame inside the midsole. This firmer foam structure cradles the foot and helps guide it towards toe-off. The shoe has also been refined so it feels less stiff and clunky than many high-support running shoes. The midsole and outsole are more streamlined, the upper holds the midfoot securely, and the toe box has been made less pointed to allow more natural toe movement. It is a comfortable everyday training shoe for runners who want soft cushioning and maximum support.
